The International Traditional Reindeer Herding Championship took place in Sakha Republic on 15–19 March as part of the plan for the main events of Russia’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2021–2023, which is being organized by the Roscongress Foundation.
The championship included competitions in sled jumping, men’s and women’s reindeer roping, a combined relay race, reindeer catching, as well as a race on reindeer sleds. In addition, the best professionals were determined in such activities like building a fire in winter, cooking fish soup on a fire, and dressing skins.
As part of the championship, the International Conference ‘Sustainable Development of Reindeer Herding Amidst Global Changes in the Arctic’ was held as well as the extraordinary meeting of the World Reindeer Herders Association, and a project to build the Unique Iengra ethno-tourism complex was presented.
