Moscow to Discuss Biological Methods for Remediating Contaminated Soils and Ecosystems of the Arctic Coast

The International Conference on Bioremediation of Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems of the Arctic Coast will be held on 25–26 October in Moscow as part of the Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council. Roscongress Foundation is the operator of all activities of the Chairmanship.

The fragile ecosystems of the Arctic are subject to increasing technogenic pollution, including oil products. One of the most promising areas of pollution elimination is the use of microorganisms to break down pollutants, which has been termed “bioremediation”.

As part of the conference, specialists will share their experiences in research and practical application of bioremediation technologies to restore the natural environment of the north. Separately, scientists will discuss the prospects for international scientific cooperation on bioremediation of coastal ecosystems in the Arctic.

The conference, to be held at the Faculty of Soil Science of Lomonosov Moscow State University, will bring together leading Russian and Canadian scientists working in the field of bioremediation of contaminated soil and water bodies.

• Pavel Krasilnikov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Soil Science at Lomonosov Moscow State University.
• Mikhail Makarov, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Acting Director of the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
• Graeme Spiers, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Geology, Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario (Canada).
