Session of Think Arctic – Think Global Project to Address Prospects for Arctic Cooperation within BRICS

Participants in the session ‘Prospects for Cooperation in the Sustainable Development of the Arctic within BRICS’ of the international project Think Arctic – Think Global, which will be held on 25 May in Moscow, will discuss the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Arctic policy of BRICS countries, and the preservation of Indigenous peoples.

The Arctic plays an enormous role in the international supply chain and international value chains, which is consistent with the economic component of cooperation for sustainable development within BRICS. At the same time, the Arctic is a region where the traditions of Indigenous peoples have been carefully preserved. Cooperation and sharing experience in ways to support Indigenous peoples as well as protecting their rights and interests is also a key issue for BRICS countries, each of which is culturally and ethnically diverse. Collaboration in this regard is in line with the social element of the BRICS sustainable development agenda. Finally, the Arctic has a fragile ecosystem and is highly exposed to global processes of climate change, which makes cooperation within the third element of the BRICS sustainable development agenda even more crucial.

The discussion participants will identify opportunities to shape a common BRICS agenda in relation to the Arctic. The results of the session will be included in an analytical report on international cooperation in matters concerning sustainable development between Russia and the Arctic and non-Arctic states, which will be prepared as part of the Think Arctic – Think Global project.

The session will be attended by experts and representatives of the scientific community from Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa. The discussion will be moderated by Anastasia Likhacheva, dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at the National Research University Higher School of Economics.

The Think Arctic – Think Global project is being implemented jointly by the Roscongress Foundation and the HSE Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies. Its goal is to promote the Russian agenda in matters concerning sustainable development, strengthen a constructive international dialogue, and offer new points of contact for Russia’s collaboration in high latitudes with all interested countries and organizations.
