Russian-Canadian cooperation in the field of sustainable development in the Arctic Region will be discussed within the framework of the Think Arctic project
International online conference “Russian-Canadian Cooperation in the Field of Sustainable Development in the Arctic Region” with the participation of leading experts, government authorities and business community representatives from both countries will take place on December 7th (18:00 Moscow time). This discussion between countries will be the second event in the framework of the Think Arctic project, a series of ten conferences on Russia’s bilateral cooperation with Arctic and non-Arctic states in terms of sustainable development organized by the Roscongress Foundation, the HSE Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies (CCEIS) and the Analytical Center for the Government of the Russian Federation. The Think Arctic project will be implemented during Russia’s Chairmanship in the Arctic Council in 2021–2023.
The prospects of Russian-Canadian cooperation will be discussed during the event, among them:
- Cooperation at the level of Russian and Canadian groups and associations of Indigenous Peoples.
- Creation of new formats and projects for cooperation in the Arctic Council.
- Development of cooperation within the framework of the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme.
- Protection of the Arctic marine environment.
- Improving the quality of life in the region, attracting highly skilled labor, as well as developing sustainable tourism.
The conference participants will also talk about Canada’s Arctic policy priorities and their compliance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals until 2030. One of the topics will be cooperation between Russia and Canada in the field of sustainable development in the Arctic, including in science and education, marine ecosystems, environmental protection, ensuring the rights of Indigenous Peoples of the North.
The interim results of experts’ analytical work and the results of inter-country dialogues will be presented at the special session of the VI International Arctic Forum “The Arctic: the Territory of Dialogue”, which will be held on April 11–13, 2022 in St. Petersburg.
The final report will include promising strategic areas for the development of the Arctic, a list of investment-attractive industries, as well as areas where Arctic Council member states can combine their Arctic strategies to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. The study is made by the leading experts on Arctic issues and sustainable development goals, representatives of government authorities, business community and public organizations.
The Roscongress Foundation will be operating the events of Russia’s Chairmanship in the Arctic Council.
