Arkhangelsk to Host Conference on Health Initiatives for Arctic Inhabitants

Arkhangelsk will host the Conference on Health Initiatives for Arctic Inhabitants on 1–3 June as part of the main events of Russia’s chairmanship in the Arctic Council in 2021–2023, which are organized by the Roscongress Foundation.

The event participants, which include scientists and medical practitioners, will discuss prospects for the development of healthcare in the Arctic, the protection of children’s health as well as proper nutrition for the region’s inhabitants, chemical safety, and mental health. The conference will also include a roundtable of the Arctic Medicine consortium and a discussion of collaboration on joint research among educational and scientific organizations as well as industrial partners.

In addition, the conference participants will share their experience in implementing start-ups and innovative projects for the health of Arctic inhabitants and will also discuss biosecurity in the Arctic and problems related to climate change.

The conference will take place at Northern State Medical University and will be attended by roughly 300 participants from Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. The event is being organized by the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and the Arctic, the Russian Ministry of Health, the Arkhangelsk Region Government, and Northern State Medical University.

Developing human capital and improving the well-being and quality of life of the Arctic population, including improvements to the healthcare system and medical infrastructure in the region, are among the top priorities of Russia’s chairmanship in the Arctic Council in 2021–2023. Russia has submitted the ‘Biosafety in the Arctic’ project to the Arctic Council’s Sustainable Development Working Group for consideration. The project, among other things, aims to significantly improve the health of the Arctic population.
