Nenets Autonomous District

General information

The Nenets Autonomous District is located in the northeast of the European part of Russia on the White, Barents, and Kara Seas.

Most of the region (more than 90%) is located beyond the Arctic Circle and the entire territory of the district is within the Arctic zone.

Administrative centre: Naryan-Mar.

Population of the district: approximately 44,000.

Area of the district: 176,700 km2.

Time zone: UTC+3. Moscow and the Nenets Autonomous District are in the same time zone.

Economy

Oil and gas production
Oil and gas production is the core industry of the region’s economy. 97 fields have been discovered with more than 1 billion tonnes of total oil reserves and more than 550 billion m3 of natural gas reserves.

Reindeer herding
The district is home to more than 174,000 reindeer. There are 28 reindeer herding farms, including 11 tribal communities of the Indigenous peoples of the North.

The region’s energy sector is isolated and decentralized. More than 260 various types of power plants (gas turbine, gas piston, and diesel) provide energy to individual settlements and enterprises.

Sightseeing attractions

Nenets Nature Reserve

The reserve is situated both on land and in the Barents Sea. The world’s only lowland subarctic and Arctic tundras have remained virtually untouched.

Pustozersk Museum and Reserve

The first Russian city in the Arctic existed from 1499 to 1962. Historical residential and administrative buildings as well as a church have been preserved. A project to rebuild a 16th century wooden prison is being developed.

Pym-Va-Shor thermal springs

The only hot springs beyond the Arctic Circle with a high content of chromium, zinc, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen, and radon. The water temperature ranges from +18 to +28°C year-round.
