Prospects for cooperation in the Sustainable Development of the Arctic under BRICS

25th of May, 12:00 (UTC+3) (hybrid format)
Moscow, Pokrovsky Boulevard, 11, Building F, HSE

In 2024, Russia will chair the BRICS, whose countries reaffirm their commitment to the balanced and comprehensive implementation of the sustainable development agenda in three dimensions: economic, social and environmental. In this regard, it seems relevant to consider the cooperation of the BRICS countries within the framework of the Arctic region. The Arctic is a region of opportunities and prospects for cooperation in the field of sustainable development. In addition, the BRICS countries already have sufficient experience and knowledge regarding cooperation in the Arctic, the Antarctic and the Himalayas.

The Arctic plays a major role in international supply and value chains, which corresponds to the economic component of BRICS cooperation on sustainable development. At the same time, the Arctic is a region where indigenous traditions and way of life are carefully preserved. Cooperation and exchange of experience in supporting indigenous peoples and protecting their rights and interests is also a relevant topic for the BRICS. Each of BRICS countries is culturally and ethnically diverse. Collaboration in this area corresponds to the social element of the BRICS sustainable development agenda. Finally, the Arctic ecosystem is fragile, being affected by global climate change, which highly enhances the relevance of regional cooperation under the environmental element of BRICS sustainable development agenda.

The event will focus on the current state and prospects of cooperation in the Arctic under the BRICS in the field of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the light of Russian chairmanship in the Arctic Council during 2021–2023. In the current conditions, the BRICS agenda for the Arctic cooperation, including mineral resources, agriculture, supporting indigenous peoples, and protecting fragile ecosystems, becomes highly relevant. The event will identify the most promising areas for BRICS cooperation in the Arctic and opportunities for the formation of a common BRICS agenda with regard to the regional issues.
