Role of Technologies in the Development of the Russian Arctic and Its Continental Shelf under Discussion at RAO/CIS Offshore 2021

On September 22, 2021, the RAO/CIS Offshore 2021 Forum held the key session of the second day: “Development of the Russian Arctic and its Continental Shelf: Science, Technology and Production — Mutually Beneficial Cooperation”, within the framework of the Conference for the Arctic Ocean Shelf Development.

The session opened with a welcoming speech by Alexei Chekunkov, Minister of the Russian Federation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic. The session was attended by Alexei Emilievich Kontorovich, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences for Geology and Development of Oil, Gas and Coal Fields; Maksim Yurievich Nedzvetsky, General Director of Gazprom VNIIGAZ LLC, Deputy Head of the Department of Gazprom PJSC; Tatiana Vitalievna Russkova, Minister for Arctic Development and Economy of Murmansk Region; Mustafa Mamedinovich Kashka, General Director of Atomflot FSUE; Alexei Olegovich Oryshchenko, General Director of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center — Prometey Central Research Institute of Structural Materials; Vladimir Mikhailovich Ryashin, representative of NORWEP Norwegian Association in Russia and Kazakhstan. The session was moderated by Mikhail Nikolaevich Grigoriev, Director of Gekon LLC, representative of the Scientific Council under the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the Study of the Arctic and Antarctic.

The Arctic shelf is being developed in conjunction with the development of the transport and logistics infrastructure, with transit zones being its most promising areas. The goal facing the ship navigation sphere today is to create routes in the Arctic Ocean using equipment based on artificial intelligence, which will provide high-profile data for navigation and meteorology.

The participants held an active discussion regarding the development of technologies for the manufacture of low-temperature alloys for icebreaking ships.

The meeting identified the promising tasks for the design and operation of offshore fields, the construction of offshore facilities and wells on the shelf. The experts noted that today a colossal resource base is located on the territory of the continental shelf, and Russian companies have high scientific potential.

The second day also included thematic roundtable discussions, special events on the youth track and technical seminars.

The Conference for the Arctic Ocean Development is held under the Chairmanship of the Russian Federation in the Arctic Council in 2021–2023, its operator being the Roscongress Foundation.
